Red Cherry neocaridina shrimp in a planted aquarium
Neocaridina davidi

Red Cherry

About this variety

The original aquarium neocaridina. Red Cherry shrimp were among the first colour variants developed, and they've earned their status as the go-to beginner shrimp. Cherry-grade individuals show solid red on most of the body, while higher grades - Sakura and Fire Red - display deeper, more uniform colour with red on the legs and underbelly. Hardy, prolific, and peaceful, they're an excellent starting point for anyone new to the hobby and a lively addition to any planted tank.

Care in Brunei's Climate

Red Cherries tolerate Brunei's warm room temperatures well and do not require an aquarium chiller in most homes. A gentle filter, a mature sponge filter, or a well-planted low-tech tank between 10 and 40 litres is all they need. Because they are locally bred here in Brunei Darussalam, they arrive already adapted to the region's climate and water, which greatly reduces acclimation losses compared with imported shrimp.

Breeding & Population

Females carry 20 to 30 bright yellow-green eggs under their abdomen at a time, and a healthy colony will multiply quickly without any special effort. From a starter colony of ten, most keepers see their first juveniles within two months and a self-sustaining population soon after. Over time the colony will self-regulate to the size of the tank and available food.

Tank Mates & Feeding

Keep them with small peaceful fish such as neon tetras, otocinclus, or guppies - or nothing at all for the fastest breeding. They graze biofilm and algae naturally, supplemented with blanched vegetables and quality shrimp pellets. See our local delivery and acclimation guide for how to settle them into your tank, or browse the full shop for other varieties.
