The Ramshorn Snail is a popular freshwater aquarium snail named for its flat, coiled shell that resembles a ram's horn. A prolific and undemanding creature, it earns its place in any planted tank by grazing continuously on algae, biofilm, and decomposing plant matter — acting as a living cleanup crew. Ramshorn snails are entirely peaceful and make excellent companions for neocaridina shrimp, sharing the same water parameters and causing no harm to healthy plants. They come in red and brown colour forms, and breed readily once established, making them a self-sustaining addition to a mature aquarium.
Ramshorn snails thrive in Brunei's warm water and are among the least demanding invertebrates you can keep. Any established tank will do - they need no heater or special equipment. One note: they build their shells from calcium, so soft, acidic water will erode shells over time; a small piece of cuttlebone keeps shells strong in soft water. They are readily available here in Brunei Darussalam with quick local delivery.
They lay transparent egg clusters on glass, plants, and decorations, and populations grow quickly in well-fed tanks. If numbers ever get out of hand, simply reduce feeding and remove visible egg clusters - the population will respond within weeks. Many fish keepers value ramshorns as a natural, nutritious live food source for puffers and loaches.
Fully compatible with all freshwater shrimp including Red Cherries - they share the same water range and never bother shrimp. They enthusiastically graze algae, biofilm, fallen leaves, and leftover fish food, and will happily accept algae wafers and blanched vegetables.
